High "Five" - Intramurals end in Style

Claremont Intramurals wrapped up Thursday afternoon beginning with a lopsided Bronze Medal Victory by Team 3, blowing out Team 2 by a final score of 8-2.

The Gold Medal match came down right down to the final minute, when Team 4 scored a late goal to come within 1, but it was too little too late as Team 5 managed to hold on to the 2-1 victory - officially becoming the first Intramural Champions at Claremont. Way to go Team 5, and Go Spartans!

Junior Intramurals wrapped up Wednesday afternoon with a pair of exciting medal matches. Team 3 pulled off the victory, upsetting Team 2 in an thrilling match that set the stage for our Gold Medal Championship - and the game did not disappoint. Strong performances from both goaltenders rendered the match scoreless, until Grade 9 student Jett Klassen tenaciously put away the biggest goal of the tournament. A big thank you to all the staff that helped ref and organize - especially to AD Darren Reisig for his leadership in running the tournament. Congratulations to Team 4, and thank you to all athletes that came out to participate!

Stay tuned for an announcement what our next Intramural sport will be, and how to register! Go Spartans!

Spartan Nation would like to give a huge shout out to Armaan Nijjar, who recently committed to the University of Alberta Soccer program in Edmonton, AB. It is with great excitement that we announce that OH Payton Henderson has committed to the Douglas College Royals for Volleyball. After 4 incredible years of being a multi-sport Spartan that included many tournament victories, Zone Championships, and MVP awards, we wish the best to Payton when she heads to New Westminster next fall.

SMYTH MAKES A SPLASH

Congratulations to Senior Spartan Ben Smyth for his Swimming & Diving scholarship to the University of Utah! UU is a Division 1, PAC 12 school with countless division titles, and Ben hopes to add to that in his time there. Go Utes, and Go Ben!

Senior Spartans Shine

Picture
Our Senior Spartans shined in their first week of action, with teams 2, 4, and 5 coming away with major wins. In a day with plenty of scoring, Thursday's action saw impressive goals from Grads Kennedy McAdams and Jordy Neary. Play continues on Tuesday, December 8th when Team 4 looks to build on their narrow lead, and Teams 1 & 3 look for their first win. Go Spartans!

Big wins from teams 1 + 3

Picture
Juniors came out in big numbers for our first round of intramural games. Team 1, led by strong performances by Josh Adey and Adia Pye, narrowly escaped with a victory, beating Team 2 by a score of 2-1. Team 2 looks to bounce back with the return of Zach Sagodi, currently on the IR.

Team 3 managed a controversial win over Team 4 after a late goal, assisted by Claremont Coach Chris McKay, was disallowed. Despite excellent play from Luca Pivetta and Maya Creswick, Team 3 (pictured in green) escaped with the "W".

The Junior Division is back in action on Monday (7th), while the Senior Division kicks-off tomorrow at lunch.

Spartans Recognized at Year-End Banquet

While attendance was much lower than previous years (and the format altered slightly), smiling faces were once again visible in the gym at Claremont Secondary for the 2019/2020 Athletic Awards. While only those receiving major awards (and their respective family members) were invited, we are proud to honor our winners, our nominees, and all of our athletes for the successes throughout the year. For a link to the complete slideshow (including team write-ups, nominees, and winners), please click HERE.
Go Spartans, and we can't wait to see you next year!

Solid weekend for Spartan Athletics

This past weekend was an outstanding one for many of our athletic teams. Claremont Lacrosse was busy this weekend, fielding 3 strong teams in their Provincial Championships. Congratulations to the Junior Boys (2nd) and the 10/11 team (3rd). Additionally, the Senior Boys Basketball team managed an impressive 101-66 win over Abbotsford Senior to capture 7th in the Province. Lastly, Girls Curling was awarded the Most Sportsmanlike Team award while placing 8th at their Championships in Kelowna. Go Spartans!

Spartans battling at provincials

The school is eerily quiet with so many teams away at their respective Provincial Championships this week. The Girls Curling team has had two big comebacks fall just short (5-7 versus Kitimat, and 6-7 versus Chilliwack). They look to get back on track tonight against Van Tech at 7:30 (the game can be live streamed from HERE on Sheet 4).

In other news, the Senior Boys Basketball team won their first game of the Provincial Championships, narrowly edging Holy Cross 69-67. A double-double from Ethan Boag (19-13) and strong rebounding from Nik Babaeff and Jakob Neufeld allowed the boys to take their opening game. The boys resume play this evening (March 5th) at 8:15 when they take on #3 seed Kelowna. Stay tuned for more...

More teams bound for provincials!

February was a busy month for Spartan success, and it appears that March will be no different, as more athletes are headed off to their respective Provincial Championships this week. Good luck to our Swimmers (Victoria), the Girls Curling team (Kelowna), the Senior Boys Basketball team (Langley), and the Junior & Senior Boys Lacrosse teams who head to Vancouver (and subsequently Las Vegas for 19 of the Senior Boys). GO SPARTANS!

Senior & Junior Girls Return from Langley

Congratulations to the Junior and Senior Girls Basketball teams, who returned from their respective Provincial Championships this past weekend. The Junior Girls had MVP performances from Adia Pye (also a 2nd team All-Star), Kat Kalabric, Sierra Lise, and Olivia Boulding on the way to a 9th place finish; while the Senior Girls overcame some early struggles to finish in 12th.

Spartan Boys are Langley Bound

Playing in front of a packed house, the Senior Boys Basketball team pulled off a commanding win 90-57 over visiting NDSS to secure the final Island berth to the 2020 Provincial Championships held in Langley next month. Dominant performances from Jakob Neufeld and Ethan Boag, and a late appearance from fan-favorite Jeff Reiberger were enough to propel the boys past an over matched NDSS team.

When asked about the game, former grad and coach Brandon Dunlop had this to say about his team: "The boys were ready to go from the beginning. We got major contributions from everyone who stepped into the game and I couldn't be more proud of each of them. It's an absolute joy to watch them play when they play the way they are capable of. They showed tonight just how tough they are, especially after a difficult loss. We can't wait to see how we stack up against the best teams in BC. We are confident in our chances against anyone."

"Win and We're In" for Senior Boys

Picture
Tuesday, February 25th will be a big night for the Claremont Senior Boys Basketball team, who host North Island rival NDSS after losing a close Island Final this past weekend in Nanaimo. With a win on Tuesday, the Senior Boys would take the last qualifying spot from the Island for the 2020 Provincial Championships in Langley; however a loss could spell the end of their season. So wear red, and let's fill the stands to support our Senior Boys at Claremont on Tuesday night! Tip off is at 7:00pm.

Senior Girls Capture Islands

On Saturday night, the Senior Girls Basketball team defeated the Royal Bay Ravens 71-64 to capture the 2020 Island Championships at Belmont Secondary. Led by Defensive MVP Payton Henderson and first team All-Stars Reese Manns and Kamryn Allen, the Senior Girls rallied from a 25-6 deficit to capture the Island title, and clinch a berth to the 2020 Provincial Championships in Langley. Way to go Spartans!

Junior Girls and Boys Clinch Provincials Berth

Led by first team All-Star Adia Pye, second team All-Star Olivia Boulding, and Bronze match MVP Kate Brooks, the Junior Girls basketball team clinched a Provincial Championship berth with a 57-48 win over Port Alberni to take Bronze at the 2020 Island Championships. The team heads to the Langley Events Centre on February 26th to compete for the best in BC.

Similarly, the Junior Boys also managed to capture the Bronze with a 67-56 win. Lead by first team All-Star Isaiah Helman, the Junior boys clinched their own berth to the 2020 Junior Boys Provincial Championships this upcoming weekend on the mainland. Go Spartans!

Congratulations to both the Junior Girls and Boys basketball teams, who were both in their respective city finals on Saturday at SMUS. Unfortunately, both teams were on the losing side of the final, but with the Silver, both teams qualify for their Island Championships this week! Catch the Junior Girls Thursday-Saturday at Brentwood College, and the Junior Boys at Lambrick Park. Go Spartans!

Way to go Senior B's!

Congratulations to the Senior B Girls Basketball team, who finished their season last night with a tight game against Belmont B. Though the girls didn't pull of the win, they did manage a 4-4 season.

In other B Basketball news, the Junior B Girls team knocked off Victoria High School in overtime to qualify for playoffs. Way to go girls!

Spartans Dominate Girls Islands

Picture
Congratulations to the Girls Curling team who were able to put away a scrappy Mt. Doug team in the finals of the Island Championships last weekend. The girls (Macy Hayes, Gabby Russell, Amanda Block, Jasmine Dhami, Emi Hayes, and Jessica Jay) have earned a berth to the 2020 Curling Provincial Championships in Kelowna in March! Also, congratulations to the boys team (Adam Rojas, Sawyer Shortt, Beckham Green, and Cooper Foxall,) who had a strong end to their season, finishing 4th in the Boys Island Championships.

4 Teams, 4 Championships

Congratulations to all 4 Claremont Volleyball teams, who EACH won their respective tournaments this weekend! Both Claremont Boys teams managed to capture the VIU Championships, while both Claremont Girls teams took home first place at the Camosun Chargers Annual tournament.
